Do AI models see your best content — or whatever they scrape first?

conversions a month you’re likely flying blind on — and optimizing against.

Quick answer

llms.txt is a proposed standard — a plain-text file at your site root that gives AI models a clean, curated map of your content, much like robots.txt does for crawlers.

TL;DR
  • llms.txt is a proposed robots.txt-for-LLMs: a curated content map at your site root for AI models.
  • Solid volume — 2,800/mo — genuinely global (Japan and India rank high).
  • But the honest finding: search interest is down ~86% from its mid-2025 peak. The hype cooled.
  • KD 50 — the hardest “easy” term here; Ahrefs and Semrush own the explainers (DR 91–92).
  • Verdict: publish a solid reference page, but don’t over-invest — this may be a fading standard.

The rare topic where the emergence story and the cooling story are the same story — it surfaced in 2025 as generative search exploded, and it is already fading.

The emergence

Interest was genuinely global — Japan and India rank right behind the US. But the trend is the headline: it peaked above 5,000 searches a month in mid-2025 and has since fallen roughly 86% to the 700s. The volume of adoption blog posts is wildly out of step with actual demand.

The commercial pull

Commercial value is minimal — a $0.80 CPC. Nobody monetizes llms.txt directly; it is technical hygiene, not a purchase decision. The value is reputational, not revenue.

Who’s competing for attention

Dominated, pointedly, by the SEO-tool companies whose own visibility depends on owning AI-search topics — Semrush and Ahrefs have published the canonical explainers. Beating the two largest SEO platforms on an SEO topic is a genuine uphill fight.

Growth or decline

Poor and declining — the defining risk. The volume has fallen off a cliff and the standard remains “proposed,” with no guarantee of adoption. Flagged a clear headwind. Not a page to build a pillar around.

How PPC Snobs executes here

llms.txt is on-brand for our Tagging module — AI-visibility plumbing — but real expertise means judgment. We implement an llms.txt file where it is low-effort and plausibly helps, and tell you honestly that the data says temper the ambition. One excellent implementation-first reference, maintained cheaply.

Publish it, interlink it, monitor the trend. If adoption turns, we’re positioned; if it fades, we spent one page, not a quarter.
